Forget the duels, the honour codes, and the cinematic last stands.
The reality of samurai life under the Tokugawa shogunate was something far stranger: centuries of enforced peace, mountains of paperwork, and a warrior class slowly being reinvented as bureaucrats.
This panel really cuts through the myth (pun intended).
A representative of the Japanese Embassy takes us through what the historical record actually shows, from the 1615 Laws for Military Households and their surprisingly mundane concerns, to the question of how a society built around warriors functions when there is no one left to fight. Come for the samurai. Stay for the bureaucracy!
